DAYTONA BEACH, FL. The Notre Dame Alumni Club of Daytona Beach, in conjunction with Father Lopez Catholic High School, is sponsoring the inaugural Hesburgh Lecture Series speech at Father Lopez Catholic High School on Saturday, March 9, 2024.
Bridging the Divide in our Polarized Political and Cultural Moment is the title of the talk to be given by John Duffy, Ph.D., Professor of Modern Communication at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Duffy, who holds four degrees and earned his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been teaching at Notre Dame since 1999. In his recent book, Provocations of Virtue: Rhetoric, Ethics, and the Teaching of Writing, he examines the ethical dimensions of teaching writing in a post-truth world.
Before the last presidential election, one thing many sadly agreed on was our nation was likely to remain deeply divided, regardless of the outcome. Repairing or bridging the deep political and social divisions within our society will require leadership, consensus building, and trust. The aim of this lecture is to help people find common ground on the issues that often divide Americans.
This lively topic is sure to be of interest to a wide variety of community members. The lecture is free, open to the public and refreshments will follow. REGISTER HERE.
The event takes place Saturday, March 9, 3:00 PM in the Father Lopez Catholic High School chapel. Free visitor parking is available in marked parking lots.
The lecture series, named after Notre Dame President Emeritus Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., the longest tenured President at Notre Dame, served as President of the University from 1952 until 1987.
